A UNESCO dual World Heritage area, Tongariro National Park was New Zealand's first National Park and the fourth in the world in 1887. With outstanding volcanic features, it is home to the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a 17km one day hike, Round the Mountain track, Ruapehu Crater Lake Climb and many other shorter walks near Whakapapa Village.
Nearby Mt Ngauruhoe made it's international film debut as Mt Doom in Lord of The Rings Trilogy. Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe are two of the most active composite volcanoes in the world, however the most recent eruptions were Tongariro in August and November 2012.
The Park is home to this country's largest ski fields, best between June-August. New Zealand's longest river the Waikato starts on the slopes of Mt Tongariro (also referred to as the Upper Waikato Stream) before flowing into Lake Taupo and out again North West (425 Km's combined).
